Tue Jan 10 Obstacles for Beginning Farmers
Young and beginning farmers need capital, land and health insurance.
The National Young Farmers’ Coalition surveyed more than 1,000 young farmers nationwide in an effort to identify the pitfalls that are keeping a new generation of Americans from going into agriculture.
Here in Bucks County land prices are prohibitive for young and beginning farmers, even land under preservation. And yet here, located between the large populations of metro New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, is where the food needs to be produced, instead of shipping food from thousands of miles away.
“We need credit opportunities for beginning and diversified farmers, land policies that keep farms affordable for full-time growers and funding for conservation programs,” says Lindsey Lusher Shute, Director of the National Young Farmers’ Coalition. Read more about the survey results here.
